Characterization of R&D&i in cybersecurity

The study published in 2015 by INCIBE in collaboration with the national ecosystem of R&D&i in Cybersecurity and some international stakeholders (feasibility study, opportunity and design of a network of centers of excellence R & D in cybersecurity) conducted an analysis to understand the context and dynamics under which R&D&i in cybersecurity in Spain is performed, concluding with the suitability of creating a Spanish Network of Excellence on Cybersecurity Research of this kind.

As part of this study, it was detected the need for reports and studies to characterize the R&D&i in cybersecurity in Spain, identifying the existing activity, characteristics, history, current and emerging topics as well as the results of their research activity.

These studies aim to perform thorough diagnostic analysis with the assistance and endorsement of national research ecosystem agents to characterize the ecosystem and identify trends in R & D in cybersecurity.

What studies are planned?

In order to characterize the R&D&i in cybersecurity the following studies are proposed:

  • Catalog and knowledge map of R&D&i in cybersecurity. Comprehensive directory with the characteristics of the different public and private research centers whose investigations are focused, totally or partially, on cybersecurity.

image catalog and knowledge map of cybersecurity research

    Catalog access

  • (Pending) Report of early detection R&D&i trends in cybersecurity. Identification of the emerging research lines with the greatest potential detected as future need or gap currently not covered by market products.

How I can participate in these studies?

These studies were carried out during the end of 2016.

At present, it is possible to collaborate in the Catalog and knowledge map of R&D&i in cybersecurity, either to update existing information or to register new teams that does not appear in the catalog.

To notify possible changes, please send your request to send mail to apoyo.investigacion@incibe.es and we will contact you.

What is the methodology followed?

The distribution of activities by study is shown below:

  • Catalog and knowledge map of R&D&i in cybersecurity: three main phases are identified
    • Design: initial phase in which the elements of the study, including the definition of the catalog tab or file in collaboration with agents of the research ecosystem are characterized.
    • Surveying: phase in which the data of the participant agents is collected to create each team catalog file.
    • Endorsement: validation of the files by the heads of the research teams characterized.
    • Publication: Creation of the study and its publication.
  • Report of early detection R&D&i trends in cybersecurity
    • Trends Map Design: initial phase in which the sources are defined as well as the desktop research, the source picking and the merge of the main sources on cybersecurity are performed to form the classification taxonomy or trend map.
    • Surveying: phase in which the target public is determined, the survey form is validated and submitted, and vision and opinion of participant agents of the cybersecurity research ecosystem and relevant agents are collected.
    • Analysis of results and extraction of conclusions: : phase to perform a statistical treatment of the data received to determine main findings and conclusions extracted from them.
    • Publication: Creation of the study and its publication.

What other initiatives are related?

The creation and publication of these studies are framed in the context of the actions and objectives of the Network of excellence on cybersecurity R&D&i.

One of its main objectives is to promote the transference of research results to the market to benefit end users. To achieve this objective of the Network, some initiatives are launched in collaboration with cybersecurity industry representatives such as the National Cybersecurity Cluster, beneficiaries of these studies.
