The first MOOC course on Cybersecurity in Industrial Control Systems organized by INCIBE closes to national and international acclaim

Posted on 02/17/2015

The first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) organized by INCIBE, the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (Instituto Nacional de Ciberseguridad), recently came to a close. Entitled Cybersecurity in Industrial Automation and Control Systems, the event was attended by 3,200 participants, 11% of whom the completed the course successfully. “Judging by the evaluations from 97% of the students, this figure is very good for such an advanced and complex online course dealing with a subject as specific as Industrial Cybersecurity. The course requires a student input of 50 hours over a short 6 weeks,” said Miguel Rego, general manager at INCIBE.

“This is the first time we’ve run our own course on Cybersecurity, and, for INCIBE, the fact that we managed to meet the goals we set is very good news indeed. It’s important not to lose sight of the need for well-trained and skilled professionals in the field of cybersecurity for industrial automation and control systems, given they are clearly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. And this MOOC represents an important contribution to raising awareness about the issue and to improving cybersecurity in industrial environments.”

The involvement of prestigious national and international experts guaranteed that the students were given first-class training by highly qualified professionals in the sector. This free massive open online course (MOOC) launched via the INCIBE training platform, is the only one of its kind in Spain. The course was delivered in English and Spanish.

Most of the participants (70%) were in full-time employment in a wide range of sectors. 34% worked in telecommunications.Mindful of the lack of skilled cybersecurity professionals available for recruitment, INCIBE decided to offer this advanced course in cybersecurity for Industrial Automation and Control Systems to give the automation and control systems cybersecurity market a boost by providing the sector with qualified personnel with the right skill sets.

INCIBE is currently designing some new training courses for cybersecurity in different fields such as IT systems, mobile devices, secure encoding and malware analysis.
