Cyberattack on Supermarket Refrigeration Systems in France
During the night of October 11 to 12, 2026, a cyberattack compromised remote control systems for refrigeration facilities at hundreds of supermarkets in France. The incident was detected in the early hours after temperature and defrost settings were altered on several units. Affected outlets included stores operated by Intermarché, Netto, Coopérative U, Carrefour, Monoprix and E.Leclerc.
The changes kept some refrigerators and freezers at temperatures of up to 50°C for several hours, forcing stores to remove fresh and frozen food and causing small fires at some locations. Reported losses reached tens of millions of euros. The affected companies removed products whose safe preservation could not be guaranteed, disconnected equipment from the Internet and worked with refrigeration specialists to restore service.
The latest available official update, dated October 13, 2026, confirmed numerous compromises involving Danfoss, Copeland and Dixell controllers and warned that the attack campaigns were probably still active. CERT-FR recommended removing direct Internet exposure, restoring and reconfiguring compromised equipment, updating firmware, changing default passwords and allowing access only through a protected network. The investigation remains ongoing and no perpetrators have been publicly identified.
