Svenska Kraftnät's Rapid and Coordinated Response to a Cyberattack on the Swedish Electricity Grid

Posted date 20/11/2025

On October 26, 2025, Svenska kraftnät, the entity responsible for operating Sweden's electricity transmission system, confirmed that it had suffered a cyberattack involving ransomware. Despite the seriousness of the incident, the company stated that there was no evidence that the electricity system had been damaged and that the electricity supply remained intact. The group of cybercriminals stole approximately 280 GB of internal information, although the specific data that was compromised is still under investigation.

The Everest group claimed responsibility for the attack, raising concerns about the nature of the incident. In response, Svenska kraftnät has launched a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the data breach and assess the implications and consequences of the attack. The company has also notified the Swedish authorities and is collaborating with other cybersecurity entities.

As the investigation continues, the electricity grid operator has reiterated that there has been no disruption to electricity distribution. Although Svenska kraftnät has managed the crisis transparently, the event has exposed the vulnerability of high-value technological infrastructure. In the future, Swedish authorities and energy infrastructure operators are expected to strengthen their cyber defenses and improve international cooperation on cybersecurity to prevent similar incidents.
