Investigation into Access to Personal Data Linked to the FBI Jobs Portal
The exact date of the unauthorized access has not been publicly disclosed. On September 22, 2026, ShinyHunters claimed to have compromised the FBIJobs.gov portal and obtained information concerning current and former employees, as well as job applicants. The following day, the FBI confirmed that it was investigating a possible exposure of personally identifiable information associated with its workforce.
A sample attributed to the incident contained names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, emergency contacts and job descriptions, although the total volume of affected records has not been publicly confirmed. The FBI subsequently determined that the incident originated from a third-party-managed platform on which a security update had not been applied. The agency removed the contractor responsible for that platform and took measures to reduce further risks and protect its personnel.
The latest confirmed status indicates that the investigation remains ongoing and that the FBI is still assessing the consequences of the incident. The agency has not publicly identified the external organization or the affected platform, nor has it confirmed the total number of employees or applicants whose information was accessed. The employment portal was unavailable during the initial response, and the FBI has not announced the conclusion of its investigation.
