Ransomware cyberattack paralyses the city of Oakland

The city of Oakland was the victim of a ransomware attack that forced it to shut down all its systems as a precautionary measure. An official statement said that essential services, such as 911, financial information and emergency services, were not affected.

In a joint effort by the city's IT department, in collaboration with cybersecurity and forensic analysis teams, services affected by the attack are being tested and recovered.

[Update 06/03/2023] The Play ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on the City of Oakland's IT system. It has also begun leaking stolen information, including 10 GB of sensitive private and personal data, financial information, passports and complete employee information, among others.
