Data leak of 12 million Australian bank customers

The Australian Commonwealth Bank lost the personal financial histories of 12 million customers. According to the Australian company BuzzFeed News, the bank decided not to inform its customers of this data loss that occurred between 2004 and 2014 after a subcontractor lost several tape drives, however, the bank initially notified the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA).

The bank statements contained sensitive personal information and could be used to create a detailed profile with personal and banking information about each user.

The Commonwealth Bank is committed to a series of actions to improve its internal culture and implement all the recommendations suggested by the APRA, assuring its clients that no action is required and apologising for what happened.
