Japanese municipal contractor loses flash drive containing personal data of nearly half a million residents

In the Japanese city of Amagasaki, a municipal employee fell asleep in the middle of the street after drinking several glasses of alcohol in a restaurant, and when he woke up he realised he had lost his bag, which contained a USB stick with personal information on approximately 460,000 residents.

The lost data included citizens' names, addresses and dates of birth, as well as bank account numbers and tax details. At the moment, the authorities say that none of the lost data has been leaked, probably because the memory stick was encrypted.
