Massive DDoS attack on Belgian government websites

A massive denial-of-service (DDoS) attack targeting Belnet, the government-funded Internet service provider, took place on Tuesday, May 4, affecting the websites of more than 200 organizations across Belgium, including the government, parliament, universities and research institutes.

Belgium's central cybersecurity authority, the Belgian Cybersecurity Center (CCB), was contacted following the attack to help contain and resolve it.

The following day, Belnet restored its services again, stating that no leaks, data theft or network infiltrations had occurred as a result of the attack.

According to Belnet, it is unclear who is behind the attack, but it is continuing to investigate; it has also filed a complaint with the Federal Computer Crime Unit.
