New cyberattack against the video game industry

Video game developer CD PROJEKT RED reported being the victim of a HelloKitty ransomware cyberattack in which some of its systems were encrypted.

The unauthorised access to the IT infrastructure by an unknown actor was discovered on 8th of February. Although some of the systems were encrypted, the backups remain intact and the company rules out any negotiations with the cybercriminals.

As of today, the company has implemented new security measures and has started to restore all affected systems. As for the affected data, there has been no confirmation that these belong to players, users of other services or former employees. On the other hand, the cybercriminals do claim to have stolen the source code for some of their most popular games and certain corporate files.

An investigation is being conducted by authorities, the Office for Personal Data Protection and IT forensic experts.
