New vulnerabilities in 4G and 5G mobile networks

A group of academics from Purdue and Iowa universities have found three new security flaws in 4G and 5G.

Attacks, called ToRPEDO, PIERCER and IMSI-Cracking, can be used to intercept phone calls, launch targeted phishing attacks and track the location of users' mobile devices.

These three security problems have been notified to the GSMA, which must first resolve ToRPEDO and IMSI-Cracking, although the solution for PIERCER lies with the telecommunications operators.
