The Washington Post's email system has been compromised
On June 12, 2025, the Washington Post newspaper, one of the most influential newspapers in the United States, detected that the email accounts of several of its journalists had been compromised in a targeted cyberattack. These accounts used the Microsoft Exchange messaging service.
The incident was discovered on Thursday evening, June 12, and at that time the newspaper launched an investigation into the incident. As a first precautionary measure, all employees reset their passwords the following day, although the intrusion is not believed to have had any impact on other systems or its customers.
According to The Wall Street Journal, on Sunday, June 15, executive editor Matt Murray, sent an internal memo to employees, informing them that a possible unauthorized intrusion had occurred on their email system. The memo also reported that the Microsoft accounts of a limited number of journalists were affected. Inside sources said the attack targeted journalists who write about national security and economic policy issues, as well as some who write about China.
So far, Washington Post has not publicly shared any details about the attack.
