The fourth edition of the Cybersecurity Summer BootCamp, organised by INCIBE and the OAS, opens in Leon

The initiative makes it possible to strengthen the ties of collaboration between Spain and the other countries, playing a role in positioning ourselves as a country of reference in matters of cybersecurity

Opening SBC 2019

The fourth edition of the Cybersecurity Summer BootCamp, the initiative of international training in cybersecurity, organised by the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), part of the Ministry of Economy and Business through the Secretary of State for Digital Progress, together with the Organisation of American States (OAS).

The Secretariat of State for Digital Progress, Francisco Polo; the Organisation of American States (OAS) secretary for Multidimensional Security, Farah Urrutia; the deputy political director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jorge Hevia; the Vice Chancellor for Resources and Infrastructure Management of the University of Leon, Adolfo Rodríguez and the Mayor of Leon, José Antonio Diez all participated in the opening ceremony. They all coincide in highlighting the importance of cooperation in the fight against cybercrime and the opportunity for training in a future field.

The city’s mayor, José Antonio Diez, highlighted the presence of INCIBE in Leon, turning the city into an international benchmark in cybersecurity, enabling the technological sector to grow in the city and creating essential synergies, mainly with the University, and wanted to express his "total readiness, as mayor of Leon, to expand collaborative projects with INCIBE, with the Secretariat of State and with the Government of Spain and to offer the municipal spaces for interesting projects such as the Cybersecurity Summer BootCamp ".

For his part, Jorge Hevia recalled that Spain is a benchmark in cybersecurity, a global issue that requires the collaboration of all countries in order to address the challenges that arise and added that "cybersecurity is a priority for the Government of Spain and proof of this is the recent approval of the new National Cybersecurity Strategy with two lines for priority action: the creation of the national cybersecurity forum and the development of sectoral plans that specify the strategy’s lines for action".

Next, Adolfo Rodríguez discussed the University of Leon’s (ULE) strong commitment in the organisation of this event and the academic institution’s important cybersecurity training offering "which makes it possible to train increasingly in demand professionals and with a future projection of inevitable growth. For these reasons, Summer BootCamp is a very special event for our Institution, since it combines several fundamental objectives such as training, internationalisation and social projection in and with its surroundings".

The OAS Representative, Farah Urrutia, highlighted her agency's collaboration with INCIBE on cybersecurity, an area representing a global challenge "transnational cooperation plays a key role in the protection of citizens, companies and governments. And it’s precisely within this context that the OAS maintains a long history of cooperation and collaboration with INCIBE with the common goal of strengthening our regions’ abilities to combat cyber threats”.

The ceremony was concluded by Francisco Polo, Secretariat of State for Digital Progress, who advocated for giving cybersecurity the importance it deserves, stating that "we can combat the risks involved in digital development and we are going to do it. With the talent of professionals, the use of cutting-edge tools and more training and awareness. We will also combat them from politics, seeking greater international collaboration and strengthening the legal framework”.

Cybersecurity Summer BootCamp

Until 27 July in Leon 350 experts from 53 countries will come together, all of them are members of Security Forces and Bodies (SFB), technicians from computer emergency response teams (CERT) and professionals from the political, legal and financial sectors.

They will have the opportunity to acquire and broaden their knowledge in cybersecurity, receiving training, in an eminently practical way, in the latest techniques in the fight against cybercrime, the management of cybersecurity incidents and the legislative aspects that must be taken into account when applying the necessary measures to counteract them.
